Two weeks ago I shared this message at The Worship Center - NYC from Nehemiah 2:11-20 called "Night Vision."
As I was meditating on the value of vision as it relates to our world, it occurred to me that we don't just need vision, we need the ability to see when we are in a dark place and we need to perceive when others cannot see.
God reminded me that two years ago just before Jan. 2012, He spoke a word to me regarding the two year season we were entering. I recall that season as being very unpleasant and difficult for believers to get through. However, His reminder was that this season was coming to and end and the night is just about over.
During this season though many of us were unaware, we were navigating in the dark. Yet at the same time there are some skills that were ascertained that can only be gained while functioning from limited sight distance.
As I prepared this message the Lord gave me two revelations about night vision that are crucial to our ability to navigate this season without reliance on our natural senses. Firstly, I considered the fact that there are many animals that are nocturnal and some only come out at night, which means they have no problem navigating in the dark.
Consider first the spectral range. This represents the spectrum that human eyes are designed to see without difficulty. Anything outside of that spectrum we need additional aids to see. Which means that there is illumination beyond our spectrum but we have to "expand" our spectral range to enjoy. So we walk by faith (expanded spectral range) and not sight (typical spectral range).
In order to navigate during a dark season you cannot use your eyes, you must use your faith!
Secondly, there is the intensity (low light) range. God designed many vertebrate animals with built in night vision. They have the ability to see in low or no light because of their tapetum lucidem. This is a reflector like membrane located behind the retina that actually reflects whatever light available (eyeshine) and creates a glow in the eye of the animal. This means that the eye functions like a flashlight in low light environments.
For us this translates into the light that is within us become the light necessary to see in dark situations. This means that the believer always has light available and can illumine any circumstance with light of Christ. Whenever we walk into a dark situation we are supposed to do just like the Lord and bring the light!
So Nehemiah goes out at night on a clandestine mission (with only a few men) so as to assess the plight of Jerusalem without light because the vision will come from within. Remember, vision is only valuable during dark times. God gives the greatest visions to His people when things are the worst. God also will cause you to see when everyone else is asleep. Just because its dark doesn't mean you should be sleeping.
Finally, remember in Genesis the Bible says, that evening and morning makes a day (not day and then night as we are trained). Before you experience the rising of your sun you must navigate through the darkness of your night.
There is no fear of the night when you have "Night Vision." You can see your enemy but your enemy can't see you!
